From Bridgton to Bates—The Baseball Prowess of the BA Class of 1904

January 22, 2021

In the fall of 1904, after completing their studies at Bridgton Academy, alumni (and friends) Harry Lord ’04 and George French ’04 both of Kezar Falls, Maine, would make their way to nearby Bates College to begin their college careers. The captain and pitcher of the Bridgton Academy team, Lord would go on to distinguish himself in professional baseball, including stints with both the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox. And, over a century later, this alumnus still carries the swagger of a baseball great, in both Bridgton Academy history and that of Bates College.

Harry’s college alma mater recently featured a story about him titled Meet Headstrong Harry Lord: Bates’ Lord of the Baseball Diamond. This article was written by Bates alumnus Mr. Bob Muldoon ’81 and originally appeared in Bates News on October 20, 2020. It is shared here with the author’s permission. Our thanks to Mr. Muldoon for his tremendous research on this story.
